Inferno chars Checkers

Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – Midway through a brutal 10 games in two weeks, the Checkers faced the Columbia Inferno at Cricket Arena. The Inferno came into tonight's match-up with a 3.10 goals-against-average and a 3-2-2 record against the battle-weary Checkers. Charlotte had last week's ECHL Player of the Week - Dusty Jamieson – and some fresh faces off the IR. In the end, the Inferno triumphed 5-2.

It looked like it would be a scoreless first, but Ryan Glenn came through at 19:33 to put the Checkers up 1-0. It is his fourth goal of the season, and his second goal within four games. Credit the assist to Eddie Pershin, who now leads Charlotte with 28 assists on the season.

After a controlled second period by the Checkers, the period ended 2-2. Inferno's Brad Ralph put the puck past Checkers goaltender, Kelly Guard, to put Columbia on the board. 38 seconds later, Rory Rawlyk answered with his eighth goal on the season. The period ended with a goal from Columbia's Tim Smith to tie it up after two.

Columbia soared in the third with three goals. Sean Owens, Tim Smith, and Chanse Fitzpatrick each had a goal for the Inferno. Although Charlotte out shot Columbia in the game 42-21, the Inferno pulled away with a 5-2 victory.

"We went after them hard," comments Checkers Head Coach Derek Wilkinson. "We were the better team tonight. We have to forget the loss and go after Gwinnett tomorrow."

The Checkers take on the Gwinnett Gladiators tomorrow night at Cricket Arena. The Checkers are 2-1-0 against the Gladiators. Charlotte (28-18-2) is looking to stay on top of the East Division with a win.
