August 10, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA
-Despite not arriving in Spokane until late last night, first-round pick Kevin Matthews looked right at home. In front of a raucous crowd of 6,038 fans at Avista Stadium, the Indians slipped past the Bears 3-2 during Dollars in Your Dog Night presented by the Mirabeau Park Hotel and Coyote Country 99.9 FM. The victory was Spokane's third straight one-run win over Yakima and completed a three-game sweep of the division rival Bears.
Matthews, the 33rd overall selection in this year's MLB First-Year Player Draft, fooled Yakima's hitters all night with a hard fastball and sharp slider. The talented left-hander racked up six strikeouts in three innings, while allowing just three hits and one earned run.
Chris Hanna
(2-1) picked up the win with three scoreless frames of relief and Jose Monegro netted his second save of the season with two strikeouts in the ninth.
For the second time in three games, third baseman Drew Robinson provided the difference with a late sacrifice fly. Robinson's seventh inning RBI scored Zach Cone to break a 2-2 tie after catcher Jorge Alfaro knotted up the game with a single through the hole at short.
Hirotoshi Onaka, Hanser Alberto, Rougned Odor, and Alfaro all had hits in the win.
The Indians head on an eight-game road trip to Salem-Keizer and Yakima before returning to Avista Stadium on Thursday, August 18th for Indians Baseball Card Giveaway Night presented by U.S. Linen and KISS 98.1 FM. The first 1,000 fans and all Banner Bank Diamond Club Members will receive a FREE set of 2011 Spokane Indians baseball cards.
The game will be followed by a Supercuts Post-Game Circle the Bases Promotion.
