Indianapolis Indians News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Third baseman Yurendell de Caster ripped a two-run single in the top of the 11th to lift Indianapolis to an 8-6 victory over Pawtucket Friday evening at McCoy Stadium. De Caster's game-winning base knock to left field capped a two-out rally after Pawtucket LHP Mark Malaska issued walks to C Paul Chiaffredo and 2B Alfredo Amezaga and plunked CF Chris Duffy with a pitch.
The Indians, who win the season series 6-2 after sweeping Pawtucket in a four-game set at Victory Field, improve to 25-16 with the win. The PawSox fall to 19-22 with the loss.
What started as a pitcher's duel between Indianapolis RHP Ian Snell (ND, 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 SO) and Pawtucket LHP Chris Narveson (ND, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) turned in to a roller-coaster ride late in the game.
The Indians erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead, but Pawtucket responded in the bottom of the ninth with a five spot to tie the game at six.
LF Cesar Crespo highlighted the eighth inning with a two-run homer to right field as Indianapolis grabbed its first lead of the night at 2-1. Amezaga lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home SS Jorge Velandia with the Tribe's third run, while 1B Graham Koonce added a two-run double and DH Brad Eldred an RBI single to round out the eighth-inning scoring.
Pawtucket re-gained the momentum with five runs -- including three unearned -- in the last of the ninth. 2B Luis Figueroa started the frame with a double to left field. Catcher Jim Buckley and 3B Dave Berg followed with walks to load the bases. Then, after a costly error by the Indianapolis second baseman with two outs, RF Mike Lockwood stepped to the plate and launched an opposite-field grand slam to send the contest into extra innings.
Indians RHP Mark Corey (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) was charged with a blown save, but picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Malaska (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Indianapolis, which improves to 1-1 in extra-inning affairs this season, salvages a series split with the decision. The Indians have not lost a four-game set since April 15-18 when Norfolk took three out of four at Victory Field.
The Indians continue their longest road trip of the season with four games at Durham. Saturday's series opener with the Bulls is slated for 6 p.m. and will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Robert Portnoy have the call. Saturday's pre-game show begins at 5:40 p.m.
