LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Indians rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the seventh to force extra innings, but fell in 12 innings at Gwinnett, 8-7, on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.
Josh Bell entered the day leading the International League in home runs (6) and RBIs (19) in the month of June, and quickly added to his production. He singled home Alen Hanson to give the Tribe an early 1-0 lead before the G-Braves matched with a run in the home half.
After two scoreless frames, Gwinnett moved ahead, 3-1, on two solo home runs in the fourth.
The G-Braves collected their third home run of the day with a two-run shot by Matt Tuiasosopo in the fifth to make the score 5-1.
Justin Masterson made the spot start in place of the freshly-recalled Wilfredo Boscan, who started against the Giants in Pittsburgh. Masterson allowed five earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.2 innings of work.
The Indians started to rally in the sixth. With runners on first and second, newcomer Tomas Morales grounded into what appeared to be a 4-6-3 double play to cripple the Tribe's chances in the frame. However, home plate umpire Chris Segal ruled catcher Anthony Recker had interfered, loading the bases ahead of a base hit by Max Moroff. Another run came across on a double play to make the tally 5-3.
Gwinnett erased the progress with two runs in the home half.
The deficit was reduced to three in the seventh as Florimon tripled home Adam Frazier for his second hit of the night. The G-Braves' lead shrank again in the eighth on Moroff's second RBI of the night to make it 7-5.
Down two runs as the ninth began, the Indians worked back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to tie the game at seven runs apiece.
A familiar face in Mel Rojas Jr., who began the year with the Indians, was the one to deliver the game's final blow. He tripled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th.
The two teams will resume action on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
