Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo began a six game east-coast road trip Tuesday night with a lopsided defeat to the IL North powerhouse, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 9-2.
After defeating the Mud Hens six days ago in Toledo, Luis Cessa was back at it Tuesday night. Cessa picked up his second win of the season, both against Toledo, going 5.1 innings while allowing five hits, one run, and striking out five. Buck Farmer, who last started on June 10th, only lasted four innings while giving up eight hits, allowing seven runs and only striking out two in defeat.
Toledo and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre both began their first inning hacks with lead-off ground-rule doubles off the bats of Dixon Machado for the Hens and Ben Gamel for the RailRiders. However, the Mud Hens were unable to scratch out a run, but the RailRiders, courtesy of an Aaron Judge two-run bomb, made it 2-0 after the first inning.
Toledo threatened again in the second, getting John Hicks and Jordany Valdespin on with nobody out, but Luis Cessa overpowered the next three Hens' hitters by striking out the side.
Aaron Judge flexed his opposite field power in the bottom of the third inning for a line drive solo home run, his second of the game, to make it 3-0.
The Scranton offense kept their foot on the gas, as back-to-back one-out walks courtesy of Farmer led to RBI Donovan Solano and Pete Kozma singles to make it 5-0. Jonathon Diaz, the nine-hole hitter, followed up the singles with a double to the wall plating Solano and Kozma to make it 7-0.
The Mud Hens were finally able to take advantage of a leadoff runner in scoring position in the fifth inning, as Anthony Gose blasted a double to straightaway center and was plated after Dixon Machado smoked a single to centerfield, making it 7-1.
The RailRiders made it 8-1 in the sixth when Mark Teixeira, rehabbing a knee injury, lofted a sac fly to left field to score Diaz off of Hens' reliever Angel Nesbitt.
Anthony Gose continued his hot-hitting ways in the seventh inning when he hammered a solo home run, his first as a Mud Hen, to make it 8-2.
Blaine Hardy, who was recently optioned to Toledo by Detroit, pitched a perfect seventh inning out of the bullpen.
Bobby Parnell came on in the bottom of the eighth, but SWB tacked on one last run via a Tyler Austin two-out double plating Judge to make it 9-2.
Toledo plays game two against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tomorrow night, as the first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Toledo Tidbits:
Gose Getting it Going- Anthony Gose had gone hitless for six games, prior to picking up a hit in Sunday's loss to Rochester. Gose, who had been hitting .166, has now hit safely in back-to-back games. The speedy Gose has three RBIs including a home run and two runs scored in the last two games in the eight hole for the Mud Hens.
Molleken, a Major Leaguer- Dustin Molleken, the journeyman minor leaguer, was called up by the Detroit Tigers Monday morning, marking his first ever time in the MLB. Molleken, the big Canadian righty, has played twelve seasons professionally including time spent in Nippon, Japan's professional league. Molleken is 1-3 with a 3.76 ERA after making several spot starts and countless appearances out of the Hen pen.
All-Star Game Voting- Triple-A All-Star Game voting is under way and your Toledo Mud Hens need YOUR votes. Send the likes of heavy-hitting Chad Huffman, the sure handed Dixon Machado, and the dominant Hen pen partners Preston Guilmet and Bruce Rondon. All-Star Game voting will remain open until June 26.
