Indians Blow Away Buffalo 14-7

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians (29-12) plated a season-high 14 runs on 14 hits as left fielder Felix Pie went 4-for-4 with two triples and two steals, right fielder Brett Carroll blasted two, two-run home runs and first baseman Matt Hague went 3-for-4 with three RBI in a 14-7 drubbing of the Buffalo Bisons (23-15) on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.

One day after plating 10 runs on a season-high 15 hits, the Indianapolis offense continued right where they left off with 14 runs on a season-high nine extra-base hits. Overall, six Indians' batters scored at least two runs, while five collected at least two RBI and four knocked multiple hits.

The Tribe quickly jumped on Buffalo starter Dave Bush as Pie roped a one-out single, stole second and came plateward when Hague ripped a base hit. 3B Jared Goedert then continued the first frame outburst with a run-scoring double, before Carroll cleared the bases with a mammoth home run to left to extend the Indians lead to to 4-0.

Buffalo took back a short lived lead with a single score in the third and five more in fifth. Former Indians INF and the IL's current top hitter, Jim Negrych, brought home two of the Bisons' runs with both an RBI single in the third and a run scoring groundout in the fifth. A Tribe wild pitch brought home another fifth-frame score, before 1B Luis Jimenez capped the rally with a two-run longball that pushed Buffalo ahead 6-4 in the top of the fifth.

That lead would be short lived, however, as the Indians put together their best offensive inning of the season in the bottom of the frame The Tribe began its onslaught by hitting for a team cycle as 2B Ivan DeJesus led off the inning with a homer to right, before Presley followed with an infield single, SS Josh Harrison lined a run-scoring double and Pie ripped his first triple of the season.

Hague continued the offensive assault in the fifth as he followed Pie's three-bagger with his team-leading 12th double, before Goedert connected on his second double of the day to bring home Hague. Carroll then tied a bow on the Tribe's seven-run inning by lifting his second two-run longball of the day, pushing the Indians' advantage to 11-6.

With his second shot of the day, Carroll extended his team-leading home run total to seven and became the first Tribe batter with multiple roundtrippers in a single contest since Dallas McPherson accomplished the feat on August 25, 2012 against Columbus. Another rarity also occurred in the following frame as Pie ripped his second triple of the game in the sixth to join OF Darren Ford (April 8 vs. TOL) as the second Tribe batter to accomplish the feat this season.

Amazingly the Indianapolis offense was not finished on the afternoon as they brought home three more scores in the bottom of the seventh. The first two tallies came around on bases-loaded walks by Harrison and Pie, before Hague lined a base hit to right to plate Presley for the Tribe's 14th and final run of the contest.

Indianapolis starter Brooks Brown (5.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) picked up the win to improve to 2-0 despite allowing six runs on seven hits over just 5.0 innings pitched. Following Brown, Tribe relievers Ryan Reid (2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) and Mike Zagurski (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) tossed three scoreless frames of relief, before Tribe closer Vic Black (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER) allowed just a solo home run to RF Moises Sierra in the ninth.

Buffalo stater Dave Bush (4.0 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) turned in his worst outing of the season, allowing nine runs one 10 hits over 4.0 innings of work to suffer the loss and fall to 4-3 on the year.

The Indians and Bisons will now continue their series on Thursday at 11:05 a.m. with LHP Andy Oliver (3-1, 2.70) scheduled to take the mound for Indianapolis and LHP Ricky Romero (0-0, 14.73) expected to start for Buffalo.

The contest will be televised on HTSN, Hometown Sports and News, available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 10:45 a.m.

"Oh absolutely. Any time guys are getting on base in front of you and keeping the line going, the idea is to benefit in big innings. [Buffalo is] a team that can really swing the bats and this is a good series for us. Our pitching is the best in the league against their top hitting and so any more runs we can get obviously the better, but our pitching can keep them in check."

(on whether he was looking to pounce on that first pitch that resulted in a first inning homer when he first stepped to the plate)

"Yeah I'm just trying to be aggressive. Over the last couple of weeks I think I've been trying to force some things and I'm just really trying to stay relaxed and see the ball and put good swings on it."

"Yeah absolutely. This game is really a lot about patience. We've got a lot of good players on this team and so Dean's done a good job of getting us all in there when he can. It definitely helps to string some games together. That way you adjust your time and this game is based on rhythm and timing and feel. So the more you can get in there, the more pitches that you see, and the more comfortable you feel."
