Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost the second of a four-game series to the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday, 10-7. The Clippers scored five runs in the first three innings and the Chiefs were unable to climb out of the early hole. Chiefs outfielder Chris Rahl went 5 for 5 in the losing effort, extending his hit streak to eight games.
Columbus (22-18) got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning. After a one-out walk to Ryan Rohlinger, Lonnie Chisenhall hit a ground ball to pitcher Chris Young that was underthrown to second base for an error. With runners on first and second, Jeremy Hermida launched a three-run home run over the right-field wall to give the Clippers an early 3-0 lead.
The Clippers were back at it in the top of the third inning. Chisenhall led off the inning with a solo home run over the right-field wall. Two batters later, Cord Phelps belted a solo home run of his own into right-center field to extend the Columbus lead to 5-0.
Syracuse (15-24) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Will Rhymes led off the inning with a base hit into right field. After a Chris Marrero fly out, Mike Costanzo singled to put runners on first and second. Zach Walters then grounded out to pitcher Toru Murata, advancing the runners a base. The next batter, Carlos Rivero, launched a double into right-center field, plating both Rhymes and Costanzo to cut the Columbus lead to 5-2.
The Chiefs added one more in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a one-out single by Chris Rahl, Jeff Kobernus reached on an error by Chisenhall. With runners on first and second base, Rhymes flied out to right, moving Rahl to third. With runners on the corners, Marrero singled into right field, scoring Rahl to make the score 5-3.
Columbus put four more runs on the board in the top of the fifth. With Fedroff on first, Matt Carson singled into center field, moving Fedroff to third base. After a Carson steal of second, Adam Abraham walked. With the bases loaded, Chris Wallace doubled to deep center field, driving in three runs. Ezequiel Carrera followed that up with a base hit up the middle, scoring Wallace from second to extend the Clippers lead to 9-3.
The Chiefs got four of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Walters led off the inning with a base hit into right field. Kris Watts then hit a massive one-out home run over the right field wall. The catcher's first home run of the season cut the Columbus lead to 9-5. With two outs, Rahl doubled down the left field line. Kobernus followed with a single that scored Rahl from second base and ended Murata's night. Then, reliever Fernando Nieve came in and surrendered an RBI single to Rhymes after Kobernus stole second. The base hit cut the Clippers lead to 9-7.
In the top of the sixth inning, Columbus added the final run of the game. Fedroff singled on a soft fly ball to left field, scoring Hermida to make the score 10-7.
Syracuse and Columbus are back in action at 7:00 tomorrow for game three of their four game series. Right-hander Yunesky Maya takes the hill for the Chiefs, while right-hander Carlos Carrasco is set to go for the Clippers.
