Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

TAKE A MULLIGAN: An overnight bus ride had the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders arrive in Toledo at nearly 6 a.m. With that in mind, the team's sluggish opening in last night's series opener with the Mud Hens is more than understandable. The Mud Hens scored two runs on bases-loaded walks and thundered a pair of homers as the IL's worst squad routed the RailRiders, 10-2. The RailRiders have lost three in a row and five of seven.

JOBA THE REHAB: The good news - Joba Chamberlain's first rehab outing went well. He started and needed just a dozen pitches, nine strikes, to get through a scoreless first inning. But scheduled starter Caleb Cotham (0-1) struggled, allowing six runs over four innings for his first loss in just his second Triple-A start.

JUMP FOR ZOI: Zoilo Almonte batted somewhere other than third in the order for the first time all season. He finished the night with three hits, a run-scoring double and two stolen bases in the sixth position. In his place, Thomas Neal batted third for the first time. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

USE THE FORCE: Luke Murton singled in each of his first three at-bats and drove in a run. It marks his first three-hit performance since Aug. 24, 2012 while with Double-A Trenton.

GOING TO EXTREMES: Toledo entered the day at a league-worst 11-28 (.282) overall, while the RailRiders boasted the best road record in minor league baseball at 12-2 (.857). Toledo also sported the IL's worst team batting average (.220) and fewest total runs scored (220). It went on to score more runs in a game than any SWB opponent all season while its 12 hits fell one short of that season-high mark.

EIGHT, NOT SO GREAT: The RailRiders suffered their largest margin of defeat this season. The last time SWB lost by eight or more runs was Aug. 2, 2012 in a 13-1 blowout against Indianapolis.

WHAT'S THE DELLIN?: The recently-converted Dellin Betances' second relief outing went well. He allowed one run on two hits over two innings. He posted no walks and one strikeout. The run came on Danny Dorn's seventh-inning triple, which looked playable for Melky Mesa. Betances also took a comebacker off his backside on a Ben Guez 1-6-3 groundout, but stayed in the game and retired Kevin Russo to conclude the inning.

ALL GOOD THINGS: The RailRiders' eight-game road winning streak halted last night. The team went 8-0 last road trip in sweeping Charlotte and Gwinnett. It had not lost away from PNC Field since an April 14 loss at Rochester when the Red Wings avoided a series sweep with a 5-4 win. The eight-game run is SWB's best string of road success since taking its first 10 such affairs in 2009. The 10th win in that run was a 17-14 game that took 13 innings and 4:43 at Rochester on April 25.

OFF THE RAILS: Of the RailRiders' 11 hits last night, 10 were singles...By contrast, Toledo posted a dozen hits including two doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs...Zoilo Almonte became the first RailRider with multiple steals in a single game (2)...In addition to suffering their most lopsided loss of the season, the RailRiders' 10 runs allowed is the most for SWB since that same 13-1 setback against Indianapolis on Aug. 2, 2012...Addison Maruszak went 0-for-4 in the game...He is now in a 2-for-29 (.069) slump...Last night's effort dipped his season-long contact clip below the Mendoza line for the first time this season (.198)...Despite his misjudged ball in the outfield, Melky Mesa enjoyed an otherwise solid evening...He posted multiple hits for the fourth time in five games...In those five affairs, he is hitting .500 (10-for-20), boosting his average to .267, his best since he was at .270 following an 8-1 defeat of Syracuse on April 22.
