Columbus Clippers News Release
In a game that took fourteen innings to play, Syracuse found a way to walk-off with a 6-5 win over the Clippers at NBT Bank Stadium.
The Clippers would be the first to crack the scoreboard when Matt Lawson drove home a run with an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the second. Three innings later, Omir Santos doubled his club's lead with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, giving Columbus a 2-0 lead.
The Chiefs would get on the board with a Zach Walters solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, but Columbus got back that run and then some with a big top of the sixth. Cord Phelps started the scoring with an RBI double. Lonnie Chisenhall also contributed during that frame with an RBI sacrifice fly and Cedric Hunter added an RBI double, augmenting the Clippers lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Syracuse would stage a big rally. RBI singles by Mike Constanzo, Kris Watt, and Chris Rahl and an RBI sacrifice fly by Will Rhymes tied the game at 5-5. Nine innings was not enough to decide this game so both teams would go extra frames.
It would stay tied until the bottom of the fourteenth when Francisco Soriano drove home Rhymes with a game winning RBI double, allowing the Chiefs to walk off with a 6-5 win. Tanner Roark (W, 2-2) was awarded the victory for Syracuse. Scott Barnes (L, 2-2) was hit with the loss for the Clippers.
After a long evening at the ballpark, Columbus and Syracuse will be back at it on Wednesday night. The Clippers will tab right-hander Toru Murata (0-2, 4.50) as their starter on the hill. The Chiefs will go with righty Chris Young (1-1, 6.33). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
