Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that shortstop Erik Gonzalez will begin a major league rehab assignment with the Indianapolis Indians. He will become the 15th major league rehabber for Indy this season after the Indians had 11 different players rehab for them in the 2017 and 2018 seasons combined.

Gonzalez is in his first year with the Pirates after being acquired from Cleveland in the 2018 offseason. He appeared in 16 games for Pittsburgh to begin the year and hit .216 (11-for-51) with two doubles and one triple. As the Pirates' starting shortstop, he committed three errors in 134.1 innings and recorded 39 assists. On April 20 he was placed on the 60-day injured list with a left clavicle fracture.

The Dominican Republic native was signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent in 2008 and spent his entire career with the organization until being traded to Pittsburgh with pitchers Tahnaj Thomas and Dante Mendoza in exchange for infielders Jordan Luplow and Max Moroff. He made his MLB debut on July 16, 2016 at Minnesota and recorded his first big league hit three days later. As a utility infielder during his first full major league season in 2018, he hit .265 (36-for-136) through 81 games.
