IceGators Shutout by Gladiators 2-0

March 28, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA – The Louisiana IceGators dropped the fourth of their last five games tonight to the Gwinnett Gladiators (39-22-7). The IceGators (47-21-2) maintain their Central Division lead with 96 points, but the Mississippi Sea Wolves (42-19-7, 91 points) are closing in as they defeated the Columbus Cottonmouths (36-25-7, 79 points) 5-1. The Pensacola Ice Pilots (38-21-9) defeated the Texas Wildcatters (20-43-5) 9-6 to keep their tie for third place with Gwinnett.

At the Cajundome, the first period was scoreless as both goaltenders made key saves to preserve their shutouts. The IceGators Derek Gustafson fended off nine shots in the first frame, while the Gators pressured Michael Garnett with 14 shots.

The Gladiators broke the scoreless lock four minutes into the second stanza. With traffic in front of Gustafson, Tyler Deis deflected a shot up over the netminder's shoulder for the one-goal lead. Despite the steady barrage of shots from the IceGators, Garnett was perfect between the pipes.

The Gladiators added an empty net tally to the board with less than a minute left in the game. The 2-0 loss was just the second time this season the IceGators have lost in regulation. The first shutout came on January 2 when the Columbus Cottonmouths beat the Gators 6-0.

The IceGators have a few days off before they welcome the Pensacola Ice Pilots to the Frozen Swamp. The April 1st game is Business Night at the Cajundome. Bring your business card to the box office for $2 off any ticket.
