IceDogs Put up Strong Effort Despite Loss to Rangers
January 10, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
After last night's emotional game at home, the Niagara IceDogs hit the road to visit the Kitchener Rangers. The IceDogs were without veteran defenceman Elijah Roberts (injury), and Jackson Doherty and Jake Uberti (illness). The 'Dogs defence was boosted with the return of Mason Howard, however. Newly named captain Ivan Lodnia donned the C for the first time tonight.
The IceDogs started the game very strong, sustaining pressure in the offensive zone. When the Rangers got good scoring opportunities in the first half of the period, Christian Sbaraglia came through with big saves. The Rangers scored two goals in the second half of the period, with Sbaraglia making 13 saves.
In the first five minutes of the second period, the IceDogs and Rangers exchanged opportunities at either end of the ice. The Castleman-Lodnia-Butler line pressured especially hard, getting some of the best opportunities. The 'Dogs killed off two consecutive penalties in the second period. The Rangers extended their lead by another goal, but Ivan Lodnia cut the lead back down to 2. Alternate Captain Oliver Castleman was credited with the assist on Lodnia's 20th of the year, extending his point streak to 12 games.
The Rangers scored their fourth goal early in the third period, but as the announcer was announcing their goal, Cameron Snow wristed home his fourth goal of the season! Landon Cato picked up the lone assist on the 'Dogs second goal. Both of Cato's points this season have come against the Rangers. The goal was celebrated by all first year players who were on the ice.
As Sbaraglia was being waived to the bench for the empty net, the Rangers got control of the puck. Somehow Sbaraglia got back in time to make the save.
The Rangers added an empty net goal to win the game 5-2.
The IceDogs didn't go down without a fight, outshooting the Rangers 12-10 in the third period.
