Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs were edged by the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors by a score of 2-1 in a close battle Friday night in Mississauga. Freddie Hamilton scored the lone goal for Niagara, while Devante Smith-Pelly scored two goals for Mississauga to lead the Majors to victory.

The IceDogs opened the scoring at the 3:36 mark of the first on the power play as Freddie Hamilton pounced on a rebound to pick up his 10th goal of the season and give Niagara a 1-0 lead.

Mississauga answered back quickly at the 5:21 mark as Devante Smith-Pelly scored with the help of Riley Brace and Casey Cizikas to tie the game 1-1.

The remainder of the first period was scoreless, and Mississauga led the IceDogs in shots 14-8, but the game would stay at a 1-1 tie going into the first intermission.

The second period started off with a bang as IceDogs captain Andrew Agozzino went toe-to-toe with Majors captain Casey Cizikas just 23 seconds into the period in what proved to be a spirited tilt between the two leaders.

Although both teams took momentum from their two captains' efforts, the second period was scoreless and the two teams found themselves in a tight battle as they headed into the second intermission.

The low-scoring trend would continue into the third period until just past the midway point when Smith-Pelly was able to notch his second goal of the game. The Majors regained control of the puck in the IceDogs zone and Cizikas sent a perfect pass onto the stick of Smith-Pelly who made no mistake in tapping the puck into the net and giving the Majors a 2-1 lead.

Niagara pulled goaltender Mark Visentin during the final minutes of the third period in efforts to tie the game up, but the ‘Dogs couldn't produce the offense to take the game into overtime, giving the Majors a narrow 2-1 victory.

The IceDogs will return home to play host to the Ottawa 67's Saturday night at 7 p.m. to conclude their weekend.
