Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- Devante Smith-Pelly scored two goals as the Majors defeated the Niagara IceDogs, 2-1 tonight for their third straight win over Niagara this season. As a result the Majors improve to 18-2-0-1 on the season.
The IceDogs took the lead just over three minutes into the game but it would be the only time Niagara would celebrate as the Majors eventually tied the game and won it in the third period, suffocating the IceDogs attack in the final twenty minutes. Freddie Hamilton scored his tenth goal of the season on the power play to give Niagara the early lead. The puck was shot in by Ryan Strome and bounced off the back boards. Andrew Agozzino picked up the loose puck and made a centering pass to Hamilton for the goal. The lead was short lived as Devante Smith-Pelly jammed the puck past Mark Visentin to tie things up at 1-1. After a scramble in-front of the IceDogs goal, Smith-Pelly was able to get his stick on the puck and tie things up after the first period of play.
The second period remained deadlocked as neither team could score. However, there was a scary moment for the Majors as defenceman David Corrente blocked a shot that hit off the side of his helmet. Corrente went down but managed to skate off by himself and did not miss a shift the rest of the game.
The third period was a classic display of the Majors defensive strength as they provided the IceDogs with little opportunities offensively. Niagara began the third period with a power play that lasted 1:45 and could not muster a shot during the advantage. The IceDogs did not record their first shot on goal until past the six minute mark of the third and finished the period with only four shots on goal, three of them coming in the final minutes. Devante Smith-Pelly scored what turned out to be the game winning goal at 10:48 for his second of the game and twelfth of the season. Marc Cantin raced into the Niagara zone to win the puck and made a precise backhanded centering pass to Casey Cizikas. Cizikas was all alone but passed to Smith-Pelly who was streaking in on the side of the IceDogs goal and tapped in the gift pass from Cizikas to make it 2-1 and bring an end to the scoring. JP Anderson stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced to record the win for Mississauga. Mark Visentin stopped 29 shots in a losing effort for Niagara.
The Majors have two more games this weekend. On Saturday the Majors will head to Owen Sound to play the Attack at 7:30 p.m. and then return home to host the Peterborough Petes on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup packages are on sale.
