December 29, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs finished their weekend of games tonight in Kingston. Coming off a defeat in Ottawa, the 'Dogs were looking to get back in the winning column against the Fronts. Tonight marked the first game Jacob Paquette played against his former team. With his start tonight, Stephen Dhillon set a new IceDogs record for the most games played by a goaltender, with 167.
The IceDogs got off to a hot start to the game, with Alternate Captain Akil Thomas score 1:37 into the game. Akil was sprung on the breakaway by defenceman Drew Hunter, and scored backhand, just over the goaltenders blocker. Bradey Johnson was credited with the secondary assist. Later in the first period, the 'Dogs were awarded a 4-minute powerplay, and Oliver Castleman made no mistake in capitalizing on the opportunity. Castleman scored his 8th of the year on the man advantage to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead. Lleyton Moore was credited the primary assist, and Drew Hunter picked up his second assist on the night.
Philip Tomasino continued with the scoring touch to start the second period. Just 4 and a half minutes into the middle frame, Tomasino scored his 16th of the season, and 4th in 3 games to extend our lead to 3! Tomasino's goal was assisted by Andrew Bruder, and Drew Hunter, who picked up his third assist of the game. Then, Kirill Maksimov netted a second period hat-trick, scoring three goals in less than 10 minutes! For his first goal of the period, Makismov was fed by Matt Philip from behind the next and beat the goaltender glove side. His second goal was also assisted by Matt Philip, collecting his 2nd assist of the game, and Ben Jones. Jones sprung Maksimov on a 2 on 1 and Kirill faked the pass to score his 23rd of the year! Elijah Roberts was credited with the secondary assist. The IceDogs headed into the 3rd period leading 6-0.
The offense kept coming as Ben Jones scored his 17th of the season off a beautiful give and go with Kirill Makismov! Matthew Philip picked up his third assist of the game with the secondary assist. Oliver Castleman continued his powerplay scoring touch midway through the third period, extending the IceDogs lead to 8! Philip Tomasino and Bradey Johnson were credited with the assists.
The IceDogs return home to a nearly sold out crowd on New Year's Eve with a convincing 8-0 win over the Frontenacs.
The 'Dogs are back home for the New Year's Eve match-up to ring in 2019 against the Ottawa 67's. Be sure to bring your skates, because there will be a post-game skate with the players on Meridian Centre ice!
