St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Buoyed by a two-goal performance from Jerome Samson - including the game-winner in overtime - the St. John's IceCaps scored three unanswered goals en route to a 3-2 win over the Worcester Sharks Wednesday night at Mile One Centre.

Andrew Gordon had the other goal for St. John's, as well as the assist on the game-winner. Eddie Pasquale was strong between the pipes for the IceCaps, stopping 23 of 25 shots.

Rylan Schwartz and Daniil Tarasov had the tallies for the Sharks, who led 2-0 after 40 minutes of play. Troy Grosenick turned aside 27 shots in a losing effort.

With the IceCaps on the power play in the opening frame, it was the Sharks who struck first at 2:03. After a miscommunication at the Worcester blueline, Schwartz charged after the puck in the neutral zone before walking in alone and backhanded it upstairs on Pasquale to make it 1-0.

Just over six minutes into the second frame, Tarasov extended the Sharks' lead to two on the man-advantage. Pouncing on the rebound of a Sharks shot, Tarasov fired the loose disc up and over the pad of a helpless Pasquale to notch his team-leading seventh tally of the season.

On a 5-on-3 power play in the third period, however, the IceCaps drew within one at the quarter-mark. Parked in front of the Worcester goal, Gordon took a cross-crease feed from O'Dell to pocket his sixth goal of the season past Grosenick.

Down a man and a goal with just under two minutes left in regulation, the IceCaps battled back with a shorthanded marker from Samson at 18:15 to send the game to overtime. After waltzing into the Sharks zone with a head of steam, Samson attempted the wrap-around goal on Grosenick - who kicked the initial shot away with a toe save - before picking up his own rebound and firing it into the yawning cage.

Then, just 26 seconds into overtime, Samson picked up where he left off in the third by notching his second goal of the night to earn the comeback win for the IceCaps. Taking a feed from Andrew Gordon, Samson made no mistake when he pulled the puck back in front of the net and wristed it past Grosenick into the bottom corner.

The IceCaps will look to continue the momentum against the Sharks again Friday night, when the two clubs tangle for the second of their three-game series at Mile One Centre.
