IceCaps Defeated by Bulldogs

April 19, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps fell 4-1 to the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday night at Copps Coliseum in the first of three road games this weekend to close out the 2012-13 season.

Philippe Lefebve had two goals while Louis Leblanc's second period shorthanded marker stood up as the game-winner. Robert Mayer stopped 30-of-31 shots to earn the win for Hamilton.

Josh Lunden scored the IceCaps' only goal while Jussi Olkinuora made 22 saves in his AHL debut.

After a scoreless first, Hamilton got on the board in the second period at 5:27 on a goal by Lefebvre. Olkinuora made the initial save but could not find the loose puck, which was eventually banged home by Lefebvre to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later after the Bulldogs were whistled for too many men on the ice, Hamilton scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0. Nathan Beaulieu took a slapper from the point following an IceCaps turnover and the rebound kicked right onto the stick of LeBlanc, who deposited his 10th to give the home side a two-goal advantage.

Greg Pateryn made it 3-0 late in the second with a power play marker. Pateryn wired a one-timer from the point in the middle of the ice that beat Olkinuora to give the Bulldogs extra insurance heading into the third period.

St. John's finally got on the board at 7:24 of the third on Josh Lunden's sixth of the season. Zach Redmond fired a one-timer from the right point that was tipped nicely in front by Lunden to get the IceCaps on the score sheet and make it 3-1.

However, Lefebvre added his second of the game into an empty net to seal the victory for Hamilton.

St. John's continues its season-ending road trip Saturday afternoon with a matinee affair in Toronto against the Marlies. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at stjohnsicecaps.com and on 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch online at ahllive.com. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. NT with the pregame show getting underway at 4:00.

Notes: Zach Redmond played his first game with St. John's since Jan. 5 after being reassigned by the Winnipeg Jets on a conditioning stint, picking up an assist on the IceCaps' lone goal. Redmond had been out of the Jets lineup since late February after suffering a serious cut on his leg... St. John's went 0-for-7 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill... Josh Lunden has scored in back-to-back games... Ben Maxwell has an assist in consecutive games... Jake Marto, recalled from Colorado (ECHL) Thursday, made his season debut for the IceCaps.
