Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - The Portland Pirates, American Hockey League affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes, clinched a spot in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs on Friday by virtue of a 3-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
This is the 15th time that the Pirates have made the Calder Cup playoffs during their 20 year history in Portland, and first time since the 2010-11 season. It is also the first time a team affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes has made the playoffs since the San Antonio Rampage reached the Western Conference Quarterfinals in 2008. The Pirates have advances past the first round of the playoffs 6 times in their 14 prior appearances, making it to Conference Finals 3 times and the Calder Cup Championship twice. Portland holds an overall record of 70-68 in the postseason, winning the Calder Cup in their inaugural 1993-1994 season.
The Pirates last playoff run in 2011 saw Portland defeat the Connecticut Whale in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals 4 games to 1, but fall to the eventual Calder Cup Champion Binghamton Senators 4 games to 2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The 2013 Calder Cup playoffs will start the week of April 22, with schedules to be announced. The Pirates will play all home playoff games at the Cumberland County Civic Center, with at least 1 game of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to be played at the Civic Center.
Tickets are still available for tomorrow's regular season home finale against the Connecticut Whale at the Cumberland County Civic Center this season by calling (207) 828-4665 ext. 350 or online at ticketmaster.com.
