Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

The Pensacola Ice Flyers played their first of seven home games in December last night as their I-10 rival, the Mississippi Surge, entered The Hangar for the first time this season. After a 5-3 loss and a 2-1 OT loss back on November 11th and 12th in Biloxi, the first portion of redemption was had as the Ice Flyers won 7-3.

The Ice Flyers came out firing on all cylinders, firing shot after shot at Surge goaltender Nick Eno. However, it was the Surge that opened the scoring on a breakaway goal by Colin Reddin, as he took the feed from Nick Guran and sent him in alone. The Surge then spent some time in the penalty box, and that is when defenseman Donnie Harris scored his first as an Ice Flyer on the powerplay, with assists from Jeff Topilko and Dan Buccella. The Ice Flyers fired 19 shots at Eno in the first, while the Surge sent 7 shots at Steve Christie.

The second was dominated by the Ice Flyers, scoring 4 goals in just over eleven minutes. Tyler Soehner scored his second of the season from Topilko and Jordan Chong. Nearly 3 minutes later, Chong made the score 3-1 with his tally from Kevin Brojek and Nolan Waker. Brit Ouelette added another goal less than 2 minutes after that, with Jason Dolgy helping out on the goal in his first game with the Ice Flyers. Andrew Harrison then completed the scoring in the second with his 5th of the season. Ryan Salvis, also in his first game in an Ice Flyers' jersey, drew an assist with Buccella. The score at the end of 2 periods was 5-1 for the Ice Flyers while both teams accumulated 8 shots each in the frame.

The Surge came out in the third and were determined not to go quietly. 6 minutes into the third, Reddin scored his second of the night for the Surge. A few minutes later, Guran added one on the powerplay that brought the Surge within 2 goals of the Ice Flyers. After that, Ice Flyers' Topilko expanded on his 2 assists of the night, scoring two goals 3 minutes apart, and put the victory out of the Surge's reach. Finishing off Eno's busy night in the Surge net, the Ice Flyers had 17 shots in the third for a game total of 44. The Surge shot 7 times at Christie in the final frame, bringing their game total to 22.

Pensacola improved their record to 5-6-2 and is riding a 3-game winning streak at home, while the Surge fall to 8-8-0.

The Ice Flyers travel to Augusta to take on the RiverHawks Saturday night at 7:35 PM EST / 6:35 PM CST, and Mississippi is on the road again Saturday in Columbus. The next home game in Pensacola is next Friday, December 16th as they face the Cottonmouths for the 5th time this season, 1st time at home. Puck drops at 7:05 PM.
