Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Desoto, MS - Knoxville Ice Bears' rookie goalie Jesse Kallechy stopped 39 of 40 shots en route to his second professional victory by defeating the Mississippi RiverKings 4-1.
Knoxville lit the lamp first at 13:38 in the first period. Kevin Swider danced out of the corner by eluding two defenders and passed the puck to Emery Olauson who held the puck while eluding a defender and a sprawled RiverKings goalie Scott Darling then lifted a backhand shot under the crossbar.
Five minutes later, Tyler Fletcher fed a streaking David Segal breaking away alone, when he was hooked from behind and crashed into the net. Tower of power, Mike Towns followed up the play and roofed the puck over the display of humanity in the net for the Ice Bears to increase the lead to 2 - 0, where it ended after the first 20 minutes of play.
Midway through the second stanza, Ricky Helmbrecht fired a pinpoint pass from deep inside his own zone to Eric Slais as he crossed into the RiverKings zone. Slais faked his drive to the net and delivered a pass to Swider who ripped the puck through Darling's legs for a 3-0 lead.
Thirty seconds later, Darrell Stoddard put the RiverKings on the board with a tap in off a rebound from Ice Bears goalie Jesse Kallechy, for his only blemish of the evening.
Leading 3-1 heading into the third period, Knoxville wasn't finished yet, the Ice Bears lost the face off in the RiverKings end forcing Dan Bremner to pursue a RiverKings player behind the goal line where he battled with Towns who slipped the puck to a wide open Segal who fired it past Darling.
The Ice Bears have won four consecutive road games increasing their record away from the Knoxville Civic Coliseum to 6-4 and overall 13-4 for second in the SPHL.
The Ice Bears return home Friday, December 16th for Race Night and Saturday, December 17th for Guaranteed Fight Night sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Both games are at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum with the puck dropping at 7:30 each night. For tickets call 865-656-444 or visit www.knoxvilletickets.com.
