RiverHawks Continue Offensive Dominance in 6-3 Victory
December 10, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks continued their explosive offensive play as they defeated the Pensacola Ice Flyers 6-3 Saturday night at the James Brown Arena. The RiverHawks overcame a first-period deficit with goals from multiple sources and strong goaltending to record their third win in a row.
The fight-filled win keeps the RiverHawks three points ahead of the Knoxville Ice Bears in the race for first place in the Southern Professional Hockey League, and bumps the RiverHawks' record to 14-3-1 on the season. The RiverHawks have now scored 19 goals in the three games since their last loss.
Goaltender Jon Olthuis had a shaky start to the game, allowing two goals to the Ice Flyers in the first period. However, he bounced back and gave his team stellar goaltending through the rest of the game, allowing just one more goal and making 32 saves for his third win of the season.
While the RiverHawks continued to generate offense throughout their lineup, it was Jim Gehring that stood out the most, scoring two goals off of beautiful snap shots. The two goals pushed Gehring back into the league-lead for goals scored.
Also continuing their strong play were forwards Matt Auffrey and Chris Doyle. Auffrey scored the RiverHawks' only goal in the first period and added an assist later in the game. Doyle also had a goal and an assist, extending his scoring streak in both categories.
They were not alone in chipping in two-point efforts, as Jason Price, Aaron McGill, and Dustin Cloutier also made the score-sheet twice. Cloutier's points extended his scoring streak to 13 games, the longest in the SPHL so far this season. During that timeframe he has picked up 23 points and currently sits fifth in league scoring overall.
The RiverHawks have a full-slate of games next week starting with a road game against the Huntsville Havoc Thursday, December 15th. Fans can watch that game at the Official Live Watch Party of the RiverHawks at Somewhere in Augusta at 2820 Washington Rd.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, December 16th and Saturday, December 17th as they play back-to-back games against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The puck drops at 7:35pm both nights.. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
