Mississippi Surge News Release
Jesse Cole and Orrin Hergott each scored a pair of goals as the Columbus Cottonmouths downed the Mississippi Surge 5-2 Saturday night in Columbus.
Columbus completed the night on an empty net goal by Jordan Braid with ony 43 seconds left.
After Cole and Hergott staked the Cottonmouths to a 2-0 first period lead, Colin Reddin scored his third goal in the last two games to cut the lead to 2-1. Cole's second of the night gave Columbus a short lived two-goal lead once again. But it lasted just 43 seconds, until Jeff Grant scored his first goal of the year for the Surge.
Hergott put Columbus back up by two with 13 minutes to play, and Braid did away with any hopes for a Surge comeback.
The loss is the first of the season for Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley. The current SBK SPHL Player of the Week is now 5-1-0 on the season.
The same two teams will meet in the Surge's next game Saturday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum featuring the annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Teddy Bear Restoration and Carpet Cleaners.
