Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Pensacola Ice Flyers traveled west on I-10 to take on the Louisiana IceGators and were looking to expand the gap between themselves and the Gators in the standings. They did just that with a 5-2 win and tied the SPHL record for points earned in consecutive games at the same time. Pensacola has now earned at least one point in the past 16 games.
The Ice Flyers kept Louisiana on their heels for much of the first period and controlled the pace of the game. Tyler Amburgey picked up his first goal with Pensacola when he beat in a rebound of a John Dunbar attempt just 2:20 into the game. Dunbar and Podge Turnbull had the assists. Dunbar got the goal he wanted earlier with an unassisted tally that came with 6:39 left in the opening period to make it 2-0 Pensacola. Pensacola pushed their lead to 3-0 when Corey Banfield tipped in a blast by Amburgey for a power play goal. Malcolm Lyles had the other assist on the goal that came with 3:35 left in the first.
Jeremy Boyer scored for Louisiana 6:34 into the second to cut Pensacola's lead down to 3-1. Boyer's unassisted goal was the only tally for either team during the second period and Louisiana heavily outshot Pensacola 13-5.
Pensacola came out in the third looking to put Louisiana back on the defensive and did just that thanks to a goal by Ryan Salvis 1:49 into the period. Brett Lutes and Dunbar picked up the assists. Louisiana's Mitchell Stretch scored to slice Pensacola's lead down to 4-2 with 13:39 left in regulation.
Pensacola's penalty kill was strong all night and came through with a shorthanded goal with 9:33 left. Lutes skated in all alone on Louisiana's Kiefer Smiley and then slid the puck through Smiley's five hole to make it 5-2. Salvis and Amburgey picked up the assists on the goal. Things got interesting during the last minute of play saw four different fights as the IceGators could no longer contain their frustration.
Ross MacKinnon stopped 29 of Louisiana's 31 shots earning his 17th win of the season.
The Ice Flyers and IceGators will face each other again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. inside the CajunDome in Lafayette.
