Shupe's Hat Trick Boosts Columbus over Fayetteville, 8-5

A hat trick by Preston Shupe was the highlight in Cottonmouths' 8-5 win against the Fayetteville FireAntz.

Shupe's first goal came 6:33 into the third period. He then added goals at 8:50 into the third and at 9:26 into the third.

The Columbus Cottonmouths bested their season scoring average. Columbus has scored at the pace of 3.4 goals per game during the current campaign. The Cottonmouths took advantage of Fayetteville's penalties, tallying three goals off of five power play opportunities. Columbus found itself short handed often, totaling 23 penalty minutes and allowing five power plays. By firing 58 shots on goal, the Cottonmouths exceeded the 27.2 shots they average per game this year.

Columbus also got points from Levi Lind, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Columbus also had goals scored by Steve Mele, who had two and Will Aide and Matt Gingera, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Neilsson Arcibal, who had two and Jason Gray, Andy Willigar, Dan Bremner, and Seth Ronsberg, who each chipped in one.

The FireAntz racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and two majors for 56 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Fayetteville had been spending in the box. The FireAntz surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Fayetteville averages 2.6 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. The 38 shots that the FireAntz put on net surpassed Fayetteville's average of 22.9 shots per game this season.

The FireAntz were helped by John Clewlow, who racked up two goals and one assist. Clewlow scored the first of his two goals at 11:16 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Bobby Reed assisted on the tally. Clewlow's next tally made the score 7-6 Columbus with 3:16 left in the third period. Fayetteville additionally got points from Corey Toy, who also registered one goal and one assist, Corey Tamblyn, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Reed, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Zach Carriveau also scored for Fayetteville. In addition, Fayetteville received assists from Kyle McNeil and Ryan Hand, who contributed one a piece.

Curtis Martinu rejected 33 shots on goal for Columbus. Peter Skoggard took the loss and made 39 saves before being replaced by Dustin Carlson who made 11 saves. Team's Brandon Richardson and Hand were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
