Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - On a night where the Winston-Salem Dash honored the city of Winston-Salem rebranding as the Winston-Salem Hyphens, they were still the same ball club that had gotten out to one of the best starts in 13 years. Behind the best pitching performance of the year and 12 hits, Winston-Salem ran away with an 8-0 victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers, taking the series on Saturday night at Truist Stadium in front of 6,134 fans.

For the second straight game, Winston-Salem (18-6) had success from its starter Jonathan Cannon. The right-hander was in control early, facing one over the minimum through the first three innings.

On the other side, Greensboro (15-11) starter Anthony Solometo also had Hyphens hitters stifled over the first three innings, but in the fourth, Winston-Salem wore him down.

With two outs, two reached against the lefty, and with runners on the corners, Keegan Fish delivered, knocking home his first run on the year with a single to left. Winston-Salem would add another run on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead and that was all Cannon needed.

Following the two runs, Cannon retired the next nine batters he faced, punching out three more along the way. The Georgia native finished his night in the seventh punching out Brenden Dixon on a 97 MPH fastball for his sixth strike-out. He departed with a 3-0 lead after a season-long seven innings, allowing only three hits.

The offense then put it away. The Hyphens loaded the bases with no outs and Taishi Nakawake cleared them lacing a double down the left field line, extending the Winston-Salem lead to 6-0. They were not done there. Wilfred Veras added to the lead on a single up the middle followed up by Shawn Goosenberg driving home a run making it 8-0.

Winston-Salem went to Everhett Hazelwood and Tristan Stivors to record the final six outs, and both worked stress-free innings, as Winston-Salem took game five and the series with an 8-0 win.

Hyphens pitching allowed only two baserunners to move into scoring position, both in the fourth where Cannon escaped a bases-loaded jam. The shutout is the first of the year for Winston-Salem.

The Hyphens take back their regular identity on Sunday for the series finale against the Grasshoppers. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
