Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Alexander Vargas clubbed a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning helping the Hudson Valley Renegades down the Wilmington Blue Rocks 3-1 on Saturday night at Heritage Financial Park.
In the top of the first, Viandel Pena began the game with a single off 'Gades starter Chase Hampton. Pena then advanced to third base on a dropped third strike which put runners on the corners and one out. Trey Lipscomb brought in Pena on a groundout to third to give the Blue Rocks a 1-0 lead, the third time in the series that Wilmington scored in the opening inning.
Hampton excelled after that, amassing nine strikeouts in 5.0-plus innings of work. Over his last two starts, the right-handed pitcher has punched out 19 batters in 9.2 innings.
Kyle Luckham allowed just five hits across six shutout innings for Wilmington, striking out nine in the process. The Renegades threatened by loading the bases in the sixth after a two out walk was issued to Rafael Flores, Luckham induced a flyout to Aaron Palensky to escape the jam.
Jaren Zinn (1-1) entered in the seventh and started his outing off with a strikeout before Ben Cowles legged out an infield single, and Aldenis Sanchez doubled to place runners at second and third with just one out. Two batters later, Alexander Vargas crushed his fifth home run of the season to hand Hudson Valley a 3-1 lead. Vargas finished 2-for-4 with a run, a home run, and three RBIs.
After Bailey Dees (1-0) tossed two scoreless frames out of the bullpen, Jack Neely finished off the final two innings and recorded his first save of the season. Hudson Valley has now come from behind to win in three of their four wins against the Blue Rocks in this series.
The win put the Renegades a season-high 10-games over the .500 mark. In 2022, the 'Gades didn't reach the 10-over mark until August 16.
Hudson Valley and Wilmington finish off their six-game series at Heritage Financial Park on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 1:45. The Renegades will send RHP Drew Thorpe (1-0, 2.86) to the hill, opposite of RHP Chance Huff (2-1, 4.50) for the Blue Rocks.
Renegades Record: 18-8
