Huskies Overpower Eau Claire

The Duluth Huskies continued their winning ways as they topped Eau Claire 10-5 on Saturday. The victory marked the seventh in a row for Duluth, the longest active streak in the Northwoods League.

The Huskies had a pair of early four-run innings to take an 8-0 lead after three innings. Nick Sogard doubled with one out in the first inning and advanced to third base when Sam Baier singled. Chris Gilbody drove in Sogard with an RBI single and John Lagattuta cleared the bases with a three-run homerun.

An error and two walks loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third inning. Eau Claire issued three consecutive bases loaded walks before Baier delivered an RBI single to give the Huskies an eight-run lead.

The Express got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning when Spencer Myers scored on a sacrifice fly by David LaManna. Justin Mitchell delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the sixth to once again give the Huskies an eight-run lead. Eau Claire answered with three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to trim Duluth's lead to four runs.

The Express stranded two runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings before Kyle Jacobsen led off the top of the ninth with a solo homerun.

Andrew Stout (2-0) allowed a run on four hits and struck out five in five innings en route to his second win of the season. Logan VanWey pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second save of the season. Baier and Jacobsen each finished 3-4 with two runs scored and one driven in.

The Huskies improve to 14-5 and are now tied with Madison for the best record in the Northwoods League. The Express fall to 5-14 as to the two teams close their two-game series with a 2:05 matchup on Sunday in Eau Claire.
