Akron RubberDucks News Release
Trenton, NJ - Facing a three-game losing streak entering Tuesday's game at Trenton, the Akron Aeros needed a dominant performance from their starting pitcher, and T.J. House delivered exactly that.
House threw six shutout innings, holding the Thunder to only two hits. He struck out a season-high nine batters, walked none, and led the Aeros to a 5-1 victory at Arm and Hammer Park.
The Aeros (4-8) snapped the losing skid at three and also gained a game on first-place clubs Bowie and Harrisburg, both of whom lost on Tuesday.
House (1-1) lowered his ERA to 3.24 from 5.06 at the start of the night. He retired 13 batters in a row at one point in the game. On a night when all his pitches were thrown for strikes, House allowed only a harmless, second inning single to Kyle Roller and a two-out double in the sixth to Ramon Flores. He retired the other 18 batters he faced, exactly half of those by strikeout.
For the second straight night, the Aeros jumped ahead early. In the top of the third, Ronny Rodriguez registered Akron's first hit of the night off Trenton starter Zach Nuding (0-2). Tyler Holt followed with and RBI single to make it 1-0. After Holt swiped second, Jose Ramirez doubled him home for a 2-0 advantage.
Things fell apart for Nuding in the fourth, as the Aeros tacked on three more runs. A dropped third strike for a passed ball put Jesus Aguilar on first, Quincy Latimore's bunt to third was thrown away for an error, and Carlos Moncrief walked to load the bases with none out. Newcomer Chris Wallace drew a walk to force in a run. Rodriguez chipped in a sacrifice fly. Giovanny Urshela then capped the scoring with a single to right field to score Moncrief to make it 5-0.
This night, however, the lead didn't slip away. House gave way to Cole Cook in the seventh. Cook gave up three straight one-out singles to make it 5-1, but lefty Edward Paredes came on to fan back-to-back lefthanded hitters Neil Medchill and Kevin Mahoney. Sean Armstrong worked the eighth, and Jose Flores closed it down in the ninth.
The five Akron pitchers combined to strike out 15 hitters, the most in a single game this season.
The Thunder (8-4) saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
Rodriguez was 2-3, RBI for the Aeros. Holt was 1-4, but now has three RBI in the series.
The Aeros will wrap up the series and road trip on Wednesday morning at 10:35. LHP Matt Packer (0-1) will start for Akron, while LHP Francisco Rondon (1-0) is the announced starter for Trenton. The game will be carried live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
