Soo Greyhounds News Release

GUELPH, ON- For BORIS KATCHOUK, the 2015-16 season has started quickly for the 1st-year Hounds forward, and he helped pace the Hounds on Friday Night in their first road game of the season.

Just 1:08 into the first period, the Waterloo, ON product cut across in front of the net of Justin Nichols and re-directed his 3rd goal of the season home off a MEDRIC MERCIER point shot to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead.

The goal was the first of a trio the team would notch in the opening twenty minutes, to hold a 3-0 lead.

"That's something we talked about certainly, knowing coming into Guelph and what I know they really start and want to put pressure on the teams to come in, and for us it was more try counter that" began Head Coach Drew Bannister in reference to the start.

"We used our speed and our skill and possession to really back them off and put pressure on them and get a lead. That was kind of how we entered the game was to take the game over from the beginning and roll our game on them" he added.

After Katchouk, both COLTON WHITE (Nine seconds into a power play, from the point) and GABE GUERTLER (glove side shot) both scored their firsts of the season to add onto the lead.

The Hounds third goal saw Storm starting netminder Justin Nichols replaced by Bradley Van Schubert after facing sixteen shots while the Hounds fired 24 in total on the Guelph net in the period.

The second period provided a lull for the visiting club, as they were assessed a number of penalties that took the team away from it's game and allowed the Storm to get into the game, temporarily.

As an early Storm 5-on-3 expired, Hounds defence man GUSTAV BOURAMMAN was tagged with an infraction that saw a penalty shot awarded to Vladislav Barulin.

Guelph's 2nd selection in the 2015 CHL Import Draft would backhand his attempt wide retaining the Hounds three goal lead.

Shortly thereafter, and less than a minute apart, James McEwan (breakaway, backhand glove side) and Barulin (a backhand from the slot on a turnover) would cut the lead quickly making it a 3-2 Greyhounds lead.

As quick as Guelph cut the lead, the Hounds regained some breathing room when BOBBY MACINTYRE notched his 1st goal as a Hound firing five-hold on Van Schubert to make it 4-2.

Then as another penalty put the Hounds on the Store Your Stuff penalty kill, Luke Burghardt finished off a bounce that came off the glass to Raaymakers right and travelled to the left where he stood to again make it a one-goal game, now 4-3.

With under five minutes to play in the second, BORIS KATCHOUK split the Guelph D inside the zone and went blocker side for his 2nd goal of the game, 4th of the season, sending both teams to the dressing room after forty minutes with the Hounds leading 5-3.

Guelph outshot the Hounds slightly, 16-12 in the period.

The flood gates would open beginning in the opening minute of the third period as JACK KOPACKA, ZACH SENYSHYN and GUSTAV BOURAMMAN tallied for the Hounds.

Just 53 seconds into the third, three Hounds broke deep into the zone before Kopacka snuck the shot past the left arm of Van Schubert for the 6-3 lead.

Under three minutes later, Sensyhyn wrapped the puck around the goal and backhanded home his first goal of the season for the 7-3 lead before Bouramman, at 3:54, stickhandled in before firing home a shot glove side for his first of the year as well, and an 8-3 Greyhound lead.

"The first is by far the best period we played this year. The possession and the time we spent with the puck we just came at them in waves. We were able to hold on to the puck and make plays, and it's fun for the guys when they are able to do that" began Bannister when asked specifically about his team's first and third period.

"The third was similar, it kind of got away in the third and then you could see that bad habits creep in but for the most part we are pretty happy with the results. There is certainly a good base we can build on and we'll move forward. We are happy with the result today but we'll get ready for tomorrow now" he concluded.

Guelph would answer back one final time as James McEwan scored wrapping up the game with just four seconds to go, ending in a 8-4 Greyhound victory.

The win improved the Hounds to 2-0-1-0 on the early season heading into Game 2 of the weekend tomorrow night.
