North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - The North Bay Battalion has acquired right winger Brett Hargrave in a trade with the Owen Sound Attack, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Friday.
The Battalion sent Owen Sound a 12th-round pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection that was obtained from the Windsor Spitfires as part of a Sept. 29, 2014, trade for centre Jamie Lewis.
Hargrave, 19, is a North Bay resident who was a first-round pick, 13th overall, by the Sarnia Sting in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection from the Mississauga Rebels minor midgets.
With right winger Mathew Santos facing a likely suspension for a major penalty for checking from behind on Darby Llewellyn of the Kitchener Rangers in a 4-2 home-ice loss Thursday night, Hargrave was to dress for a visit by Sarnia on Friday night.
Right winger Calvin Gomes, who hadn't seen action since Dec. 12, 2013, played against Kitchener in a return from recurring shoulder problems. The loss to the Rangers was the Battalion's third in three games this season.
The Troops learned Thursday that defenceman Kyle Wood, who had surgery on a bone in his right wrist, isn't expected to be able to play until at least mid November. Rearguard Austin Kosack was to make his season debut against Sarnia, with the Battalion set to wear Centennials uniforms.
Hargrave, who has been at home and skating with the Nipissing Lakers of Ontario University Athletics, said he was "excited to play in the home town and looking forward to it."
"I get to play in front of my family and friends, and it's definitely a great opportunity, and I can't wait to get started."
Added Hargrave: "Hopefully I'm going to have a good year, just looking forward to doing my part and see what we can do this year."
In 122 OHL games, Hargrave has scored 11 goals and earned 14 assists for 25 points while accumulating 75 penalty minutes. He sat out last season after shoulder surgery and played two exhibition games with Owen Sound this year.
As a rookie with Sarnia in 2012-13 he scored six goals and added five assists for 11 points in 63 games before being traded to the Attack after nine games in 2013-14. He completed that season by playing 50 games with Owen Sound, with four goals and six assists for 10 points.
Hargrave, six-foot-three and 208 pounds, earned one assist in a total of five playoff games with Sarnia and Owen Sound.
