Hot Rods, TinCaps Wrap Regular Season with Split
September 3, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - With the 2012 Midwest League playoffs looming, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (42-28, 80-60) and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (38-32, 69-71) split a doubleheader on Labor Day Monday at Bowling Green Ballpark. Alejandro Segovia's long home run in game one sparked a Hot Rods rally in their 5-4 victory. In game two, the TinCaps scored four times in the third inning on their way to a 5-2 win. The Hot Rods finish the 2012 regular season with an 80-60 record, which stands as the best record in franchise history.
The game one win was keyed when the Hot Rods escaped from a bases loaded, no-out situation in the top of the fourth. Reliever Jason Wilson entered the contest with Bowling Green already trailing 4-1 and immediately loaded the bases. However, the Hot Rods then turned a nifty 3-6-3 double play, started and finished by Jeff Malm. A 6-3 groundout then followed the twin-killing, and the threat was over.
Segovia connected for a long, solo home run onto Kentucky Street in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hot Rods then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two times. The tying run came in when Juniel Querecuto scampered home after a wild throw from the outfield following a Kes Carter double. Taylor Motter, pinch-running for Carter, scored the eventual winning run on a balk by TinCap pitcher Dennis O'Grady.
Austin Hubbard saved the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with the tying run at third base. Hubbard extended his franchise record, picking up his 23rd save of 2012 in the Hot Rods 80th win.
Fort Wayne spoiled the Hot Rods bid to sweep the three-game, season-ending series with their four-run rally in the third inning of game two. Keith Castillo had two hits in the game for the Hot Rods. Shay Crawford hurled 1.1 innings of hitless relief in the losing effort.
With the 2012 regular season in the rear-view mirror, the Hot Rods now turn their sights towards the 2012 Midwest League Quarterfinals. Game 1 of the "Best of Three" series is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:00 PM CDT from Classic Park in Eastlake, OH. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be hosted by the Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark on Thursday and Friday at 7:05 PM.
