Kernels fall to Clinton, 10-3 in season finale

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Clinton LumberKings clubbed 4 home runs to rout the Kernels 10-3 in the season-finale on Monday afternoon. The Kernels finished the 2012 campaign with a 53-86 record.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Kevin Moesquit doubled and scored on Zach Borenstein's RBI groundout. Patrick Brady's home run started a 5-run rally for the LumberKings in the 3rd inning as Clinton took a 5-1 lead. The LumberKings sent 9 men to the plate with only 2 hits. However, 3 walks and a hit batter aided the rally.

The Kernels scored twice in the bottom of the 3rd inning, cutting the Clinton lead to 5-3. Raul Linares and Kevin Moesquit connected for back to back doubles. Moesquit's RBI double scored Linares. Moesquit came home on Drew Martinez's RBI single.

Ramon Morla and Jabari Blash homered to deep left field in the 5th inning as the LumberKings extended their lead to 8-3. Morla's blast was a 2-run shot. Clinton added single runs in the 6th and 8th innings, extending the lead to 10-3. Ji-Man Choi's RBI double scored Patrick Brady in the 6th inning, and Dillon Hazlett homered in the 8th inning.

Mike Johnson (5-7) took the loss for the Kernels, going 5 innings. He allowed 8 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 5. Logan Odom pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 run. Joe Melioris allowed a home run without securing an out. Reid Scoggins, Nick Mutz, and R.J. Alvarez pitched scoreless innings.

Rusty Shellhorn (3-1) recorded the win for Clinton in 7 innings. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2. Jeremy Dobbs worked the final 2 innings.

The Kernels will open the 2013 season at home Thursday, April 4 vs. the Beloit Snappers at 6:35 p.m.
