Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.-Needing a win and some help to advance to the postseason, the Kane County Cougars were eliminated by the Peoria Chiefs after a 6-2 defeat on Monday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Neither club scored in the first three innings as Mike Giovenco (5-3) started for the Cougars (68-72, 34-36) and didn't even allow a hit until the fourth inning when Pin-Chieh Chen tripled and came home on a sac fly off the bat of Dustin Geiger. In the fifth, Peoria (63-75, 28-41) extended their advantage as Chadd Krist and Tim Saunders began the frame with singles before Yaniel Cabezas cracked a three-run homer.
Giovenco hit the next batter, Oliver Zapata, and was ejected while Cole White allowed the inherited run to score as Zapata crossed the dish on a Zeke DeVoss sac fly. With Peoria leading 5-0, the Cougars finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with Kenny Swab smashing a two-run homer to left against Willengton Cruz (1-4). Cruz relieved starter Ben Wells in the third after Wells only recorded six outs.
Despite numerous scoring opportunities, the Cougars didn't touch home plate again as they left 12 men on base in the contest. Down by three in the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases with two outs, but Alex Llanos flew out to the warning track in deep left. In the eighth inning, Justin Trapp singled with two men on base, but Chris Elder was thrown out at home. Pete Levitt (S, 1) didn't allow another as he closed the door to push the Cougars into the offseason.
The Cougars will return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday, April 4, 2013 as they welcome the Quad Cities River Bandits to town in the opening of the franchise's 23rd season of baseball.
