Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs built an early three-run lead for the second night in a row but couldn't hold on, falling 5-4 in 10 innings to the Kane County Cougars Sunday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 27-41 in the second half and 62-75 on the season heading into Monday's finale.
The Chiefs jumped on the Cougars early in the top of the first. Zeke DeVoss drew a leadoff walk from Kyle Smith and moved to third on an error by Justin Trapp. DeVoss scored on a Dustin Geiger sacrifice fly and Pin-Chieh Chen stole second base with two outs. Chadd Krist drew a walk and Jacob Rogers made it 2-0 with a single to left before Smith escaped the inning.
Starling Peralta cruised through the first four innings with just two walks allowed. Before he allowed a hit, the Chiefs built a 3-0 lead against Smith and the Cougars. Rogers and Saunders each collected one-out singles in the third and Rogers scored on a double by Sergio Burruel. But the Chiefs were unable to take advantage of a second Cougars error and extend the lead further.
Kane County broke through with a vengeance in the fifth inning. Alex Llanos led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to get the hosts on the board. Chris Elder followed with another triple and Peralta's second wild pitch of the inning cut the lead to 3-2. After a strikeout, Tim Ferguson doubled to the wall in right and moved to third on yet another wild pitch. Justin Trapp's groundout to second scored Ferguson and tied the game.
Both bullpens settled in and the game stayed tied into the eighth inning. The Chiefs grabbed a 4-3 lead as Jorge Soler launched the longest home run hit by a Chiefs player in 2012 to start the inning against Andrew Triggs. The blast went down the 335-foot left field line, over the Budweiser party deck and also over the first row of trees outside the stadium. All three of Soler's homers with the Chiefs have come on the road and two put the Chiefs on top.
The lead was short lived as Stephen Perakslis made his Peoria debut in the bottom of the inning, coming on in relief of Sheldon McDonald. Jack Lopez led off with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved Lopez to third and he scored on a single by Dean Espy to tie the game.
Both teams left a runner on base in the ninth and the Chiefs had a chance to take the lead in the tenth as Soler singled and was sacrificed to second. Soler moved to third on a groundout and Kane County intentionally walked Saunders. The move paid off as Sergio Burruel flew out to end the inning.
Working his second inning, Austin Reed retired the Cougars leadoff batter in the tenth before Danny Mateo singled to right and Espy singled to center. Juan Aparicio struck out looking for the second out by Llanos blooped the first pitch just inside the right-field line and out of reach of Rogers at first, to score Mateo and give Kane County a 5-4 win.
In a no-decision, Peralta allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and uncorked three wild pitches. McDonald threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit allowed and one strikeout. In his Chiefs debut, Perakslis suffered his first career blown save with one run allowed on three hits in one inning. Reed (5-8) allowed one run on four hits over 1 2/3 innings in the loss.
