About Last Night... The Hot Rods held on to a narrow lead in a 4-3 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Friday night to avoid a sweep in Geneva, IL. The Cougars took a one-run lead in the second but the Hot Rods answered back in the top of the third. Ford Proctor collected the first of his three hits with a single and then stole second. Jonathan Aranda singled to plate Proctor and tie the game. The Hot Rods took their first lead of the day in the fifth inning thanks to the long ball. Tony Pena worked a one-out walk and Proctor singled to center, putting runners at the corners. Seaver Whalen blasted a 372-foot, three-run homer off reliever Ryan Miller to left to put the Hot Rods in front 4-1. Kane County loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth against Baz, plating two, as Nick Padilla entered from the bullpen with two outs. Padilla struck out Hernandez for the final out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded while preserving a 4-3 lead. Padilla and reliever Michael Costanzo closed out the final four innings of the game, with both pitchers working through trouble but securing a 4-3 victory.
Everyone is Aboard... Seaver Whalen has the fourth-longest active on-base streak in the Midwest League, sitting at 16-games. Whalen has 17 hits in that time, with two homers, five doubles, nine runs, 11 RBIs, eight walks, and a .321 batting average while his OBP is .431. Jordan Qsar extended his on-base streak to 12 games on Friday night, and is batting .297 with an OBP of .447 over that stretch. Chris Betts is the last Hot Rods batter with an on-base streak in the double digits, reaching in 10-straight dating back to July 5. Roberto Alvarez has a seven-gamer while Izzy Wilson, Connor Hollis, and Ford Proctor have all reached in five-straight.
Against the River Bandits... The Hot Rods and River Bandits will play a three-game series beginning on Saturday that pairs the 2018 MWL Champions against the 2017 title holders together for the 10th time. The River Bandits own six MWL titles and are in command of the all-time series against Bowling Green with a 15-12 record against the Hot Rods. The Hot Rods won the 2018 series, 2-1, winning the first and third games of the series by one run while Quad Cities shutout BG in the middle game 6-0. The Hot Rods have swept QC once in their history (2013) while the Bandits have taken all three games of a series twice (2014, 2015). The Hot Rods are also 5-7 at Modern Woodmen Park and are 7-8 against QC back in Bowling Green.
Top 30 past and present... The 2019 Hot Rods have had some great talent come through, and it's well represented on MLB Pipeline's top-30 Rays prospects. While Matthew Liberatore (4th) and Shane Baz (8th) are the only two current Hot Rods on the list, Shane McClanahan (11th), Joe Ryan (17th), and top prospect Wander Franco are all on the list. Ryan, a right-handed pitcher, was recently added after beginning the season outside of the top-30. Ryan started six games in BG and posted a 2.93 ERA with 47 K's in 27.2 innings of work prior to his promotion
Yesterday's Notes... Proctor extended his hit streak to four games... He had his third three-hit game in four contests... He's had five multi-hit efforts in his last nine games played... He leads the team with nine three hit games and 24 multi-hit contests... Whalen homered for the first time since June 27 against Great Lakes... Both of his home runs this season have been go-ahead homers... It was the 12th home run hit during the fifth inning by a Hot Rod this season... BG has hit 12 homers in the first, fifth, and seventh innings which are the most of any inning... Whalen's long ball came with one out and was the 31st of the season by a BG hitter with one out, more than any other situation... Whalen had his third multi-RBI effort of the year while also setting a new personal season-high... Erik Ostberg has a hit in three-straight games... Baz fell one-shy of his career-high strikeout total... He tied his career-high in walks with five (sent on July 12 against Beloit)... He's now reached five innings in eight of his 10 starts... The Hot Rods finish their 2019 regular season schedule with the Cougars 1-2... BG is 11-10 against the Western Division... They're also 9-7 wearing the grey jerseys... The Hot Rods at 17-16 in one-run games... They're also 19-24 when their opponent scores first...
