Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, OR --- Already boasting the top pitching staff in the Northwest League, the Hillsboro Hops gained another talented arm. Called up from the AZL over the All-Star Break, 2015 Arizona second round selection Alex Young made his debut for Hillsboro, and posted a scoreless inning. The Hops' offense backed him in spades, leading the team to an 8-4 victory in the series opener over the Boise Hawks.
Young, making just his second professional appearance after a lone scoreless inning in the AZL, recorded a zero in his only inning of work in just 12 pitches. With Young's appearance for the team, the 2015 2nd, 3rd (Taylor Clarke,) 4th (Breckin Williams), 5th (Ryan Burr, already promoted to Kane County), and 6th (Tyler Mark), round selections have appeared for the Hops this season. Young was slated to throw just the single inning as the Diamondbacks preserve his arm after a busy final college season at Texas Christian University.
Piggybacking for Young tonight was Tyler Mark, who was hittable but effective. He posted four innings allowing two runs, one earned, to record the victory for the Hops. It was his longest outing of the year for Mark as the Diamondbacks are also looking to ease Mark into a starting role.
Hillsboro (26-20) started the scoring off in the bottom of the second. Shortstop Sergio Alcantara doubled to right with two outs to plate Luis Veras and Gerard Hernandez.
Boise (17-29) bounced back with a single run in the top of the 3rd to make it 2-1, but the Hops would put the game away over the next three innings.
The Hops got another in the 3rd after Alexis Olmeda hit a sacrifice fly to score Fernery Ozuna, who had reached third on a triple.
Hillsboro did their most damage and ultimately put the game away in the 4th inning. Veras, who finished 3-4, led off with a single and moved to second when Hernandez walked. With one out, Alcantara, who had two hits and drove in three, brought home Veras with a single to right. Galli Cribbs walked to load the bases, and Ozuna followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Hernandez. Finally, with two outs, Olmeda singled Alcantara home and the Hops has a 6-1 lead.
The Hops and Hawks traded single runs in the 5th inning, but Boise tried to make it interesting in the top of the 7th. They'd tally two on a ripped Brian Mundell double to center, but Will Landsheft managed to escape further damage.
Just to be safe, the Hops tacked on a final run on a Hernandez sacrifice fly to provide the winning margin of 8-4.
Same time tomorrow for the Hops and Hawks. Tune into pregame radio on Rip City Radio 620 AM and at www.ripcityradio.com.
