Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, ORE. - The Hillsboro Hops soared to an 8-3 victory against the Vancouver Canadians for their second straight win. The return of Andy Yerzy has sparked life back into the Hops, as the big slugger homered for the second straight game. Matt Tabor got the start for the Hops and improved his record to 2-1.
After a quick top of the first for Tabor, the Hops jumped on Canadians starter Adam Kloffenstein early when Yerzy blasted a two-run homer to right field. Hillsboro added a run in the bottom of the second when Reece Hampton tripled with two outs to bring in Leodany Perez . Tra Holmes led off with a line drive single to right field and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Ricky Martinez moved Holmes to third on a ground out to C's shortstop Luis De Los Santos . In a surprising turn of events, Holmes made a base running mistake that led to him to get caught in a pickle and was thrown out trying to get back to third base. With the rally seeming to be squandered, Hampton delivered the RBI triple to put the Hops up 3-0.
Holmes started another rally in the bottom of the fourth with a single to center field. Martinez followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Perez brought in Holmes and advanced Martinez to second base on a fielder's choice. After Hampton walked to load the bases, Kloffenstein threw two wild pitches to bring in Martinez and Perez. Kloffenstein's night was over after walking Axel Andueza for his fourth of the night. The Hops scored a final run in the inning when Buddy Kennedy drove in Hampton with a sac fly to right field to make the score 7-0.
Tabor put up zeros over his first four innings. The right-hander got into trouble in the top of the fifth when he allowed a lead off double to Spencer Horwitz . After back-to-back strikeouts, Tabor gave up a walk to De Los Santos and then a single to DJ Neal to put the C's on the board. Tabor fanned Davis Schneider to end the threat and strike out the side. Tabor's night was finished after six strong innings of one run ball, while striking out four.
Vancouver fought back with two more runs in the top of the seventh to put the score at 7-3. A two-out error by Martinez gave Schneider a chance, and the slugger clobbered a home run to center field. Hillsboro added a run in their half of the seventh on a line drive single by Cam Coursey to bring in Kennedy.
Manager Vince Harrison turned to Blake Workman to preserve the lead. The 6-3 right hander delivered, striking out five and tossing two innings of scoreless ball to finish off the 8-3 win for the Hops.
Hillsboro (7-10) will look to even the series against Vancouver (10-7) in the final game tomorrow at 1:05 pm. Catch all the action on Rip City Radio with the pregame show airing at 12:35pm.
