Hooks Sweep San Antonio
June 12, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Corpus Christi completed a four-game series sweep of the Missions Tuesday night with a 4-2 triumph at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium in San Antonio.
The Hooks improve to 29-35 in the first half and move into sole possession of third place in the South Division.
The Hooks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off San Antonio starter Cesar Ramos (4-6). Drew Sutton walked to lead off the frame and Jonny Ash followed with a double to right field. Todd Self then smashed a two-bagger of his own, this one to left, scoring Sutton and Ash.
Noochie Varner continued the parade with a line single to center and Ray Sadler walked, setting the stage for Beau Torbert's run-scoring grounder.
Corpus Christi's Josh Muecke, making a spot start in place of Felipe Paulino, held the Missions to two hits until the fourth. Chase Headley delivered a lead-off double and came around to score on a two-out single by Drew Macias, pulling San Antonio within two.
The Missions cut the Hooks lead to one on another two-out hit in the seventh. Brett Dowdy accounted for the RBI after driving in Macias who started the inning with a double.
Muecke (1-3), now in his second year with the club, earned his first victory as a Hook. The southpaw limited San Antonio to two runs off six hits in six-plus innings of work.
Corpus Christi added an insurance run in the ninth off reliever Neil Jamison when Sadler blasted his 10th home run off the season to right field in lead-off fashion.
The Hooks' bullpen provided another solid effort. Brian Gordon worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Kyle Middleton pitched a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save of the season.
Corpus Christi returns to Whataburger Field Wednesday night against Frisco in the first of a 12-game homestand. The RoughRiders' Edinson Volquez (4-0, 3.10) will face Jimmy Barthmaier (2-2, 5.35). First pitch is 7:05.
