Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tyler Greene's two-out solo homer in the eighth inning snapped a 6-6 tie, as the Springfield Cardinals won their fourth straight game, edging the Arkansas Travelers by a score of 7-6. The victory gives Springfield a full-game lead over the Tulsa Drillers, who lost in Wichita, 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
With two outs and the bases empty in the eighth, Greene smashed a Rich Thompson (1-2) pitch to left field for his seventh homer of the year.
After Matt Scherer (3-3) worked his second straight perfect inning in the eighth, Chris Perez came out of the bullpen to work the bottom of the ninth. Perez allowed the first two batters to reach, as Adam Morrissey and Freddy Sandoval both got hit by Perez, back-to-back. With two on and no outs, Sean Rodriguez tried to bunt the runners over but popped up to Perez for the first out. Greg Porter, who had a walk-off homer earlier in the series, then hit a weak come-backer to the mound for the second out. With two in scoring position and the game on the line, Bobby Wilson, who had three hits and three RBIs on the night, fouled out to first baseman Mike Ferris, giving Perez his 17th save of the year.
The Travs took a 2-0 first-inning lead against Cards' starter Jaime Garcia. Springfield then rallied for six runs in the second inning against Travs' starter Miguel Gonzalez.
Danilo Sanchez opened the inning with a double, then moved to third on a one-out single by Casey Rowlett. Sean Danielson followed with a run-scoring single, making it 2-1. Colby Rasmus then picked up an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2. Joe Mather put the Cards ahead at 3-2, following with an RBI single. After a run scored on a throwing error, Mike Ferris plated another run with a run-scoring single to right, making it 5-2. Jarrett Hoffpauir's sac fly to right field capped the six-run inning, giving Springfield a 6-2 advantage.
The Travs' offense scored a pair in the third, as Jaime Garcia walked the first two hitters. Bobby Wilson brought in Adam Morrisey with his second hit, making it 6-3. With the bases loaded and just one out, Aaron Peel's groundball to first brought home Freddy Sandoval, pulling Arkansas to within two at 6-4.
Greg Porter took Carcia deep in the fifth, his third of the year, making it a one-run game at 6-5. Arkansas finally tied it in the sixth, as Michael Cooper gave up a double to Ryan Leahy, who eventually scored on a Danilo Sanchez passed ball.
Garcia took a no-decision, allowing five runs on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings.
Arkansas starter Miguel Gonzalez also got a no-decision, giving up six runs on nine hits in five innings.
With just six games remaining in their first-half schedule, Springfield (32-29) now owns a one-game lead over Tulsa (32-31) in the North Division. The Cards will travel to Wichita on Wednesday to open up a four-game series against the Wranglers. Eric Haberer (3-2) will take on Danny Christensen (1-5) of the Wranglers in game one of the four-game set. Springfield will be on the road until they return to Hammons Field for the final two games of the first half on Sunday, June 17th.
