Five Hooks Named to the TL All-Star Team

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Springfield Cardinals, Arkansas Travelers and Midland RockHounds each placed eight players on the 2007 Texas League All-Star Team, announced Tuesday by the league office.

The 71st Texas League All-Star Game, presented by Whataburger, unfolds on Tuesday, June 26 at Corpus Christi, and will be televised the next night at 7 p.m. by FOX Sports Southwest. The host Hooks placed five on the South Division All-Stars - first baseman Todd Self, designated hitter Noochie Varner, reserve outfielder Beau Torbert and pitchers Chance Douglass and Troy Patton.

Springfield's contingent is led by first baseman Joe Mather, who tops the league in home runs (17) and runs batted in (44). At 31-29, the Cardinals lead second-place Tulsa by percentage points in the North Division. Steven Register, tops in the TL with 22 saves, headlines a group of six Drillers headed to Corpus Christi.

Among Midland's selections are shortstop Gregorio Petit, reserve infielder Brian Snyder and pitchers Andy Shipman, Mike Madsen and Ben Fritz. Petit and Snyder are among the league's top seven hitters; Shipman, Madsen and Fritz among the 10 best in ERA.

San Antonio third baseman Chase Headley, the league's leading hitter at .350 and second in RBI's with 41, is one of two starting position player from the Alamo City. Frisco's German Duran, second baseman for the South, stands second in TL batting at .320.

Headley and teammate Josh Geer, who leads the league with seven wins, are two of five Missions on the South squad.

Club field managers, sportswriters and broadcasters selected the teams.

The top four home run hitters in each division of the league, among the All-Stars, shall represent the North and South in the Coastal Bend Chevy Dealers Home Run Derby at 6 p.m. on the 26th. Two area high school players will also participate.

The All-Star Game follows at 7.
