Hooks Drop Third Straight

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - After finishing the first half with a Texas-League-best 48-22 record and a 13-game lead of the rest of the South Division, the Corpus Christi Hooks dropped their first contest of the second half, 5-2, to the San Antonio Missions Tuesday night in front of 4,789 fans at Whataburger Field.
Tuesday's loss marks the first time since May 1-4 that the Hooks have lost three games in a row and it is just the fourth series loss for Corpus Christi this season.
Michael Feliz, making his fifth appearance for the Hooks after starting the season at Class A Lancaster, cruised through the first four innings, facing just one hitter over the minimum. In the top of the fifth, Feliz made one mistake that was promptly deposited onto the left field berm by Missions right fielder Yeison Asencio.
Feliz (1-2) would allow two more singles in the frame but no damage came of them as he exited the game having thrown five innings, allowing four hits, one run, walking one and striking out two.
Southpaw Josh Hader entered the game in the top of the sixth as the scheduled tandem starter. The Missions were able to chip away at the 2014 Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Year, scoring a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Asencio and two more in the seventh on a two-run double from San Antonio second baseman Casey McElroy.
Corpus Christi has struggled to score runs of late, but Hooks catcher Brett Booth single-handedly put the Hooks within striking distance in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run bomb to left field off of Missions reliever Cory Luebke, who was making a rehab appearance for the San Diego Padres.
The Missions quickly scored one more insurance run in the ninth on another RBI single from Asencio, this time off of Texas League All-Star Travis Ballew.
The Hooks were unable to mount a rally off of San Antonio closer Tayron Guerrero who retired the side in order for his seventh save of the season.
In the end, Corpus Christi's bats were no match for Missions starter Colin Rea. Rea (2-2) lowered his Texas-League-leading ERA to 1.06 with seven shutout innings Tuesday. The Hooks managed just five baserunners - three hits and two walks - off of the 24-year-old.
Colin Moran, who recently came off the disabled list, was one of the few bright spots for the Hooks offense, reaching base in three-of-his-four plate appearances with two walks and a single.
The Hooks look to end their losing skid when they host the penultimate game of a five-game series with San Antonio Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Whataburger Field.
