Jankowski, Missions Pen Turn Away Hooks

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Travis Jankowski lined Aaron West's 2-2 pitch into center field, scoring Taylor Lindsey for the decisive run in San Antonio's 4-3 14-inning win over Corpus Christi Monday at Whataburger Field before 5,002.

The Missions (31-39) improved to 2-5 in extra-inning affairs. The Hooks (48-22) dropped to 3-1.

Jankowski was hitless in four plate appearances during regulation, and struck out in the 10th before singling twice in extras. Lindsey and Griff Erickson singled with one away in the 14th, but West recovered to fan Luis Domoromo. Then came Jankowski, who capped an eight-pitch plate appearance by driving a change-up.

Adam Cimber (3-2), the fifth Missions pitcher, faced the minimum over two frames for the victory. The San Antonio bullpen - Dennis O'Grady, Brandon Alger, former Hook Michael Dimock, and Cimber - was exceptional, retiring 26 of 29 over the last nine innings.

West is 3-4.

Hooks ace Chris Devenski found himself in a first-inning quandary after Jose Rondon doubled and Casey McElroy walked. Catcher Roberto Pena caught McElroy napping at first, and fired a successful pick-off throw to Conrad Gregor. San Antonio's threat went by the boards when Devenski whiffed Hunter Renfroe.

Corpus Christi then pieced singles by Teoscar Hernandez, Jon Kemmer, and Colin Moran together off Casey Kelly for a 1-0 lead.

Kelly's third-inning control issues led to a second Hooks tally. He walked Leo Heras and Chan-Jong Moon consecutively, then uncorked a wild pitch. Hernandez followed with an RBI ground out.

Hunter Renfroe's sixth home run of 2015 and his third in three series games put the Missions on the board.

Corpus Christi regained a two-run edge during the fifth. Three straight infield singles on first pitches by Danry Vasquez, Roberto Pena, and Heras loaded the bases for Moon, who bounced into a run-scoring double play. San Antonio had three twin killings in the first five innings.

Kelly's night ended after five innings, six hits, two walks and a strikeout. Devenski, in line for his eighth victory, exited after five as well. He allowed four hits, one walk, and struck out four.

The Missions drew even off Adrian Houser in the seventh. Free passes to Yeison Asencio and Lindsey - plus a wild pitch - set the stage for Erickson's two-run single to right.

Pena, the Texas League's top defensive catcher, threw out three would-be base stealers.

Michael Feliz (1-1) takes the mound at 7:05 Tuesday for the Hooks against San Antonio's Colin Rea (1-2).
