Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester,MN) - The Rochester Honkers jumped ahead to an early lead and never looked back in a 8-3 win over the St. Cloud Rox on Friday, August 2, at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MN.
Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) reached on an error to start the top of the first inning for the Honkers and Caleb Dugas (Copiah-Lincoln Community College) drew a walk to set up a three-run homerun from Max Murphy (Bradley) to give the Honkers a lead before they even made an out. Kevin Barker (UC Davis) doubled with two outs in the inning and scored on a single from Matt Halloran (Minnesota) to make the lead 4-0.
The Rox cut into the lead with a run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a two-out RBI double from Chris Paul. Halloran picked up his second RBI of the night on a ground out in the third inning to regain the four-run lead at 5-1.
Rochester got more two-out hitting in the top of the fifth inning as Mike Friel (Hofstra) drove one run in on a RBI single and Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) added a two-run double to build an 8-1 lead after four-and-a-half innings.
The lead was enough for Honkers relief pitcher Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) as he earned the win (1-4) with five scoreless innings. He struck out six batters on the night. John Oltman took the loss (0-1) for the Rox. He allowed five runs, three earned, on three hits in two innings of work. Rochester starting pitcher Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) allowed one run on one hit in two innings in his first appearance since June 23. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) allowed a pair of runs in the eighth inning, but Stephen Paladino (Felician College) followed with a scoreless ninth inning to close the door.
Barker and Deacon each collected a pair of hits to lead Rochester's offense. Deacon, Halloran, and Murphy each contributed multiple RBI on the night.
The two teams will wrap-up the two-game series in St. Cloud on Saturday, August 3, at 6:05 p.m. Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) is scheduled to start for the Honkers (6-20, 24-37.) Lucas Long (San Diego) is slated to make the start for the Rox (16-10, 30-31.) Rochester will conclude its eight-game road trip with a pair of games in Thunder Bay before returning home on Tuesday, August 6, to begin a six-game home stand that will end the regular season.
