La Crosse Loggers News Release
LA CROSSE, WI -- La Crosse (14-11) fell to the St. Cloud Rox (16-9) in 11 innings on Thursday night by a score of 6-5.
Lead-off hitter Mike Nadratowski (Grand Valley State) continued to swing a hot bat. The sophomore hit a two-out bases loaded double in the bottom of the second inning to give La Crosse an early 2-0 lead.
Starter Steve Hagen (Wooster) did his part on the mound as well. After hitting Devin Pearson in the first inning, the righty retired 11-of-out-12. Three of those 11 putouts were by way of a strikeout. Hagen lasted five innings and gave up just one earned run on five hits and a walk.
The newest member of the Loggers, Nick Kanavas (Arizona) made some noise in his first official bat. With Nick Day (Iowa) already on base via single, the freshman-to-be sent a Kyle Fischer fastball over the left field wall for a 2-run homer.
With La Crosse leading 4-0, the St. Cloud bats woke up in the top of the fifth. Designated hitter Vincent Jackson led off the inning with a double to right. Dustin Breshears then laid down a nice sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Day made a beautiful bare-handed play on it, but his throw was errant to first and Jackson came around to score the Rox first run of the game.
St Cloud was not done there. Following a fly out to left, third baseman Blake Headley singled up the middle. Lead-off man Clay Williamson then drove in Breshears on a ground out to first. With Headley at second, Pearson roped a double to the right-center gap, cutting the Logger lead to 4-3.
Lefty Cam Rowland (Diablo Valley CC) came on in relief of Hagen in the top of the sixth. Rowland worked a one-two-three sixth before running into trouble in the seventh. After walking Tim Colwell, the freshman walked the Rox' lead-off hitter Williamson. Pearson then reached on an infield single and Colwell came around to score on an error by Rowland.
Right-hander Ben Cejka (UW-La Crosse) replaced the Diablo Valley CC product and induced an inning-ending flyout. Cejka continued rolling in the top of the eighth as he worked a one-two-three inning, featuring two strikeouts.
St. Cloud pounded out three singles and drew two walks in the top of the ninth off of the sophomore. When all was said and done, the Rox had tallied just one run.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, catcher Austin Rei sent a 3-1 fastball out of the Lumberyard to send the game into extras.
Michael Lowden (California) worked a clean top of the tenth to set the stage for the heart of La Crosse's order in the bottom of the frame. Despite a Juan single, the Loggers could not muster up a run.
A lead-off single by Colwell followed by a sacrifice bunt by Headley put a runner on second with just one out for St. Cloud. Williamson came through once again, this time with an RBI-single. The hit would be the eventual game-winner.
La Crosse will travel to Madison Friday and Saturday for a two-game series with the Mallards. Tune into the Loggers Radio Network where Micah Schroeder and Nick Rytilahti will bring you all of the action live from the Duck Pond.
