Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors snapped a four-game losing streak Thursday night against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters by a score of 3-2 at Witter Field. The victory gives the Blue Anchors a 10-15 second-half record and a 20-37 mark overall.
The Rafters were first on the board against Scott Sanderson in the second inning. Robbie Coman walked to start the inning and went to second on a Michael Jurgella single. A sacrifice bunt by Derek Peake put both runners in scoring position with just one out. Charlie Curl then reached on a Dalton Leuschke error which brought home Coman. Then a sacrifice fly by Riley Spetz gave Wisconsin Rapids a 2-0 lead.
It took the Blue Anchors offense a while to get going but they finally got going against John Kravetz in the fifth. Andrew Mulato cut the score in half with a solo shot to left putting Alexandria down 2-1.
Against reliever Trevor Koehn, the Anchors struck again. Mulato started the seventh with a single and went to second on a Keegan Dale sacrifice bunt. Kris Goodman hit a triple off the base of the centerfield wall to knot the score at two. Ryan Blanchard flied out for the second out of the inning but a passed ball scored Goodman and the Anchors had a 3-2 lead.
The Rafters put together one last rally attempt in the ninth when they loaded the bases with just one out against Andy Johnson. The final two batters popped out to end the game and the Anchors won 3-2.
Sanderson pitched three solid innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks with one strikeout. The bullpen threw very well and it started with Kevin Hatcher. He pitched two shutout innings surrendering two walks with two punch outs. Ross Slaney (2-1) threw three shutdown frames gave up one hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Finishing the game was Johnson who walked two batters and gave up a hit.
