Willmar Stingers News Release

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Waterloo Bucks have cultivated a knack for pulling out close wins. The Bucks manufactured a single run in the bottom of the 8th inning to upend Willmar, improving to 3-1 in one-run games against the Stingers. The loss puts the Stingers 1 1/2 games behind the Duluth Huskies in the NWL North Division wildcard race with ten games left on the schedule.

The Stingers jumped out to an early three-run lead in the 4th inning. After Nick Halamandaris (Cal-Berkley) scored on a wild pitch, Danny Brennan slapped a two-RBI single into right field, continuing his hot hitting over the last several games. Coming into the game, Brennan (St. Louis) had recorded 15 hits in his last 29 at-bats and finished 2-for-5 and earning the CDI player of the game honors.

After a Waterloo rally chased starting pitcher Josh Matheson (MSU-Mankato) from the game, Zack Tillery ended the threat with a jaw-dropping diving catch. Jake Riffice came to bat for the Bucks with the bases loaded, trailing 3-2 and attempted a squeeze bunt. The ball popped into the air up the third base line and Tillery (Florida Gulf Coast) came charging in to make an improbable catch that ended the inning with the bases loaded.

Willmar collected nine hits in the game, but was held without a hit after the fourth inning single from Brennan. Nick Halamandaris broke a recent slump, reaching base three times and finishing 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Stingers fall to 3-3 on their grueling road trip with tomorrow night's contest being the finale before returning home to Willmar for a game against the Alexandria Blue Anchors.
