
Honkers Lose Heart-Breaker to Bucks

(Rochester, MN) - The Waterloo Bucks completed a four-game sweep over the Rochester Honkers with a dramatic 8-7 win in 15 innings on Sunday July 7 at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA.
The Honkers grabbed their first lead of the series in the top of the third inning when they scored a pair of unearned runs. Matt Halloran (Minnesota) started the inning with a walk; he scored when Reid Roper (Illinois) reached on an error. Roper came around to score on a RBI ground out from Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) to take the early 2-0 lead.
Will Sparks and Marcos Calderon delivered back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the fourth inning and Gerrion Grim III walked to load the bases for John Ziznewski. Ziznewski singled to score Sparks, while Calderon and Grim III scored on an error on the play to give the Bucks a 3-2 lead after four innings.
Waterloo added one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 6-2 after six innings of play.
Roper was hit by a pitch to start the eighth inning and Hanawahine was walked to give Rochester two base-runners with no outs in the inning, Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) followed with a single to score Roper and Hanawahine scored when Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University) reached on an error. Kevin Barker (UC Davis) drove a two-out triple to score Burgess and Pomeroy to tie the score at 6-6 after seven and a half innings. Pomeroy led the Honkers offense with three hits in the game.
The two teams each threatened to score but traded zeros through the 14th inning. Hanawahine led off the top half of the 15th inning with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a single from Max Murphy (Bradley) to give the Honkers a 7-6 lead. Sparks and Calderon each singled in the bottom half of the inning to set up a two-out, two-run, walk-off double from Ziznewski.
J.D. Moore earned the win (3-1) for the Bucks, as he allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of work. Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) took the loss (0-1) for the Honkers. He allowed two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) started for Rochester, he allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits in 4.2 innings. Landon Simpson allowed six runs, two earned, on six hits in eight innings for Waterloo. Roper allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings of relief, while striking out five.
Rochester (0-4, 18-21) will now host the Mankato MoonDogs for a two-game series that begins on Monday July 8 at 7:05 p.m. College teammates are scheduled to face-off in the start. Nick Dolsky (Oklahoma State) is slated to start for the Honkers, while Jon Perrin (Oklahoma State) is scheduled to take the mound for the MoonDogs.
