Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU - Former Wisconsin Woodchuck Darin Ruf was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Ruf, who spent his collegiate years at the University of Creighton, played for the Woodchucks during the 2007 summer. He was drafted by the Phillies in the 20th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Ruf was first called up to the majors on September 14, 2012 where he made his MLB debut as a pinch hitter.
Entering the 2013 season Ruf was considered to be the 13th best prospect in the Phillies organization. Much of this can be attributed to him breaking the Reading Phillies', the Phillies Double-A affiliate, single season home run record as he hit 38 home runs during the season. This was also the most for any minor league player during the 2012 season.
During Saturday night's game Ruf came in as a substitution later in the game where he recorded one hit as well as scored one run against the Atlanta Braves.
Before being called up by the Phillies, Ruf had a .266 batting average with 81 hits and 44 runs scored. Of those 81 hits, 22 were doubles and seven were home runs all while driving in 46 runs.
Ruf is the ninth player from the Woodchucks to be called up to the Major Leagues. Some notable alumni of the Woodchucks that played in the Majors are Ben Zobrist, Daniel Descalso and Casey Janssen.
