Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, Minn.)- The Honkers completed the two-game sweep of the Blue Anchors Sunday afternoon, defeating Alexandria 10-2 on a sunny Father's Day.
The Honkers collected 11 hits in the game, breaking out of a team slump over the last week, earning consecutive wins for the first time since June 6. Their pitching also returned to form as Spencer Greer (Western Nevada CC) and Matt Kent (Texas A&M) combined to allow just six hits to the floundering Blue Anchors. Greer, the starter, pitched seven innings and scattered just four hits and one walk and mixed in five strikeouts, keeping the Blue Anchors scoreless in his start.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Honkers wasted no time taking the lead. Connor Schaefbauer (Minnesota) lead off and reached first base on an error by Blue Anchors starting pitcher Zach Muckenhim (North Dakota). L.J. Brewster (Hawaii) batted next and hit a long home run over the left field fence, scoring his sixth and seventh RBIs this season on his second home run.
While Greer kept the Blue Anchors quiet, the Honkers' big inning came in the bottom of the eighth when Rochester unloaded on reliever Ryan Froom (South Dakota State) scoring five runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-out, bases-clearing double that banked off the base of the center field fence from Casey Fletcher (Illinois) scoring three runs. Fletcher finished the game 4-4 with five RBIs.
Four Honkers recorded multi-hit games Sunday afternoon, a breakout game at the plate ahead of their two-game series with the Willmar Stingers tomorrow at home. The Honkers will head into the big series with the North Division leaders with some momentum now after their sweep of Alexandria.
Tomorrow, Monday, Seth Holbert (Sam Houston State) is set to make his Honkers debut on the mound at 7:05 p.m. His first start will be an important one as the first half of the season winds down and the Stingers come to town. Tickets are available at rochesterhonkers.com.
