Green Bay, Wis. - Dane Hutcheon (University of Montevallo) may be the only true freshman to spend every game on the Bullfrogs roster, but he has been a student of the game his entire life. His father, Mike, has been a coach at the college level since 1991, before Hutcheon was born.

Hutcheon explained that his father's coaching style played a key role in his selection process when deciding on his college commitment. In his words, "My dad was always a guy who focused on building character in addition to building a baseball player."

It was for this reason that Hutcheon passed on offers from schools in his home state of Colorado, including Divison I Northern Colorado, to attend the University of Montevallo and play for coach Chandler Rose, a former assistant of his father's at Air Force.

Hutcheon said that he is close with his coach and has exchanged text messages with Rose since his arrival in Green Bay. Hutcheon also regularly calls his father to talk about recent games. He said that with both his father and Rose in the picture, "I have two father figures and two coaches. I am incredibly fortunate."

Hutcheon played every day for Montevallo at shortstop. He was immediately taken under second baseman's Will Fulmer's wing, yet another positive influence on Dane. The New York Mets drafted Fulmer in the 22nd round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Likewise, in Green Bay, Hutcheon has developed a close relationship with Ryan Howell and Dean Long. Both have taught Dane to have more patience while refining aspects of his game.

At Green Bay, Hutcheon has learned that playing every day of the week without off days teaches players to have short memories; "Every day is a new day. Every day is a new opportunity to learn and improve."

While Hutcheon is looking forward to further tapping into his potential as a baseball player, he indicated that is also looking forward to teaching what he has learned with the Bullfrogs to some of the younger players at Montevallo.

The general demeanor that Hutcheon carries indicates he is maturing at an exceptional rate for a player his age. Dane is an exemplary teammate, student, mentor, and carries all the intangibles you would hope to find in a baseball player. All signs point toward a bright future for the young shortstop.
